“by the way”という表現には、
「ところで」「ときに」「話はそれるけど」「話は変わるけど」「そう言えば」
などという意味があります。
話題を変える場合や、今の話題に付け加えて何かを言う場合などに
用いられる表現ですね。
多くの場合は、文頭で用いられますが、文中や文末で用いられることもあります。

Andyが、Tommyから聞いた話を、刑務所長のNortonに話した場面で、
このTommyの話を信じていないNortonに対して、

「さしあたり、仮にそのブラッチが実在したとしよう。」
