この“the Christ”という単語は、
“swear word”（ののしり言葉）と呼ばれるもので、
怒りや苛立ち、驚きなどの気持ちを強調する働きがあります。

ですから、“What the Christ …?”と言うと、
「一体何を・・・？」「一体全体何を・・・？」というような意味になります。

ただ、このように“Christ”「キリスト」の名前をみだりに用いることは
敬虔なキリスト教徒からすると、神を冒涜する行為“blasphemy”になります。

“What the hell …?”や“What the fuck …?”という表現も
同じような意味合いになりますね。

ただ、これらの表現に嫌悪感を感じる人も多いので、
あまり人前では用いないほうがよいかもしれませんね。

看守のHadleyが、

“What the Christ is this happy horse shit?”
「この騒ぎは一体何だ？」

と言っていますね。

この“this happy horse shit”という表現は、
“horselaugh”「ばか笑い、高笑い」という表現を下品に言い換えて、
「ばか騒ぎ、大騒ぎ」という意味合いで用いているものと思われます。
