“That’s the way it is.”という表現には、
「そういうものだ」「そういうことだ」
「それが現実だ」「仕方ないよ」
などという意味があります。
「それが現状だよ」という場合に用いられる表現ですね。
これと似た表現に“That’s the way it goes.”という表現があります。
この表現は、「世の中そういうものさ」「仕方ないよ」「それが運命さ」
「そんなことよくあることさ」「それが現実さ」などという意味になり、
そうなるのは運命だから仕方がないという場合に用いられますね。
このほかにも、この表現と同じような意味合いで用いられる表現として、
“That’s the way the ball bounces.”
“That’s the way the cookie crumbles.”
“That’s the way the mop flops.”
などという表現もあります。
これらの表現は、
「ボールはそのようにはずむものさ」
「クッキーはそのように砕けるものさ」

この“That’s the way it is.”という表現は、
映画「ショーシャンクの空に」のセリフで用いられています。
刑務所の中庭で、懲罰房から戻って来たAndyがRedと話をする場面で、
「出所したら、メキシコにあるジワタネホという太平洋沿いの町で、
海岸の近くに小さなホテルを開き、宿泊客を貸切ボートで釣りに
連れて行くんだ」と言うAndyに対して、
Redが、「そんなことを考えるのはやめた方がいい、アンディー。
そんなことは馬鹿げた夢物語だ」と言った後に、
“I mean, Mexico is way the hell down there, and you’re
in here, and that’s the way it is.”
「つまり、メキシコははるか南にあって、お前はここにいる。

と言っていますね。
そして、これに対して、Andyが、
