「（人）を死ぬほど怖がらせる」
「（人）をものすごく怖がらせる」
「（人）を震え上がらせる」
などという意味があります。
ただ、ここで用いられている“the hell”という強意語は、
あまり上品な表現とは言えないので、用いる場面には注意が必要です。
“scare the living daylights out of somebody”や
“scare the life out of somebody”や
“scare the shit out of somebody”などという表現も
同じような意味合いで用いられていますね。
